Bump-out creates streetcar problems
Monday, 10 January 2011 13:03

The extended sidewalk (bump-out) and raised bike lane just South of Fermanagh avenue has created an attractive but inadequate parking spot.  In the last week I have seen someone park in this spot and block the streetcar 4 times.

A blockage on the line causes havoc in the streetcar schedule and impacts the transit service along the whole line.

It's easy to tell if you are safe or not: the streetcar tracks are concrete and the road is asphalt.  Don't park on the concrete tracks!

Has anyone else noticed that said 'bumpouts' seem to be placed in seemingly random spots along Ronces? I dont remember this from the original plans. I get why there are bumpouts for the streetcar. But it there are bumpouts in the middle of some blocks, too. Looks like maybe these are for the bus? But these take up valuable parking spots (that's why cars are blocking the streetcars; not enough parking); why not combine bus stops w/streetcar stops? After two years of construction, I imagine the businesses on Ronces are none too happy about the loss of parking.

If these additional mid-block bumpouts remain, is there any talk of putting a Green P somewhere?

I'm pretty sure they are moving the streetcar stops once construction is done. That said the bumpouts do seem odd. As if impatient streetcar waiters won't creep out onto the bumpout/bike path begging for a collision.

But lets give it time, I'm not out of optimism yet.
