High Park is the biggest park in Toronto and a cherished feature to nearby neighbourhoods. The person to thank for this island of green in a sea of concrete is John Corby.
Colborne Lodge - where the Howards livedĀ Corby was born in the English countryside in 1803. When he was 15 he became a sailor and spent a couple of years at sea but didn't take to it. He went back to school and studied what we would now call "civil engineering." When Corby was 29 he changed his name to John George Howard and moved to Toronto. |

Roncesvalles Avenue takes its name from Roncesvalles in Northen Spain. This is one of the namesakes from Colonel Walter O'Hara, who owned the land on which Roncesvalles Avenue is now located. The average Roncesvillian might not know anything about O'Hara. Other than a few street namesakes, O'Hara has largely been lost to history. Oh yeah, there was once a bar called O'Hara's at 233 Roncesvalles (now Thai Chef.) O'Hara's story isn't as glorious as you might have been led to believe. |

Those of us who live in Toronto spend several months of the year wondering "why do we live here?" The winters are cruel. The summers are steamy. Like many who came before us, we are drawn to the city itself. Toronto's existence has a lot to do with top-hats. The city of Toronto formed around the mouth of the Humber river - a major stop on the fur route. |
